Our heritage home was relocated to this piece of land back in the 1950's during the Resettlement Era of Newfoundland.  This Resettlement effort was an organized approach to centralize Newfoundland's population into growth areas.

As evidenced by the newspaper (dated February 17, 1914) found in one of the walls during our renovation, the house is at least 111 years old as I write this in 2025.

Newfoundland History - House Floating

During the resettlement process in Newfoundland and Labrador, many homes were physically floated on the ocean to new locations—a remarkable feat of ingenuity and resilience.  This process, often called "house floating," was necessary as entire communities were relocated from isolated outports to larger, government-supported towns between the 1950s and 1970s.

To move a house, residents would first detach it from its foundation and reinforce its structure for transport. Large barrels, logs, or even oil drums were placed underneath to help keep the home buoyant. When the tide was high, the house was carefully dragged onto a raft or simply floated on its own, guided by boats, ropes, and sometimes even horses or winches. Once in deeper waters, the home was towed—sometimes for miles—across bays and inlets to its new location. Upon arrival, it was pulled ashore, placed onto a new foundation, and secured for continued use.

This incredible process allowed families to bring not just their belongings but their entire homes with them, preserving a deep sense of connection to their past even as they started anew in a different community.
